Print receipts automatically — on settle or after every payment

Let the receipt printer print by itself: once when the check is paid, or a receipt per payment on split bills. Pick the methods, the copies, and terminals that differ.

3 min read

By default staff tap Print receipt when a guest wants one. Turn on Print receipts automatically and the receipt printer prints by itself — decided by the server for every POS (web, phones and the main terminal), so each payment prints exactly once.

The scenario

A table of three splits the bill. Each guest wants their own receipt for expenses, and card payers always want one — cash payers rarely do.

Set it

  1. 1Open POS › Printing, tab Receipts & labels, the Print receipts automatically card. Choose Off, When the check is settled (the full bill prints once, the moment the check is paid) or After every payment.
  2. 2With After every payment each payment prints its own receipt, shaped by the split: Split by item — that guest’s items, their share of tax and service, what they paid and their change; Split equally — Guest 2 of 3 · share, the bill total and what’s still due; a custom amount — a payment slip with the amount paid and the remaining balance. A check paid in one go prints the full bill. Switch on Also print the full bill when settled to print the whole bill after the last payment too.
  3. 3Under Which payments print keep Every method, or pick Only these and tick your card methods. Under Copies choose 2 for a second copy marked COPY. Save with the bar’s Save changes.
  4. 4One terminal different? POS › Devices, the terminal’s menu › Receipts on this screen…: Restaurant’s setting, Always (prints even when the restaurant has it off — on settle, or on every payment if you chose that) or Never. Staff with the layout permission can also change it on the POS itself: Alerts on this screen › Receipts on this screen (on the main terminal, change it in the dashboard).

What you’ll see

  • The receipt comes out a moment after the payment — the payment itself never waits for the printer. A retry, a double tap or a slow network never prints the same receipt twice.
  • Print receipt still works. Once the bill printed by itself, a manual print is marked COPY.
  • It needs a receipt printer: the terminal’s own Receipt printer if it has one, else the default receipt printer on POS › Printing. A receipt never opens the cash drawer by itself — the Open the cash drawer card below decides when the drawer opens.
  • Restaurants that existed before this setting arrived start on Off — nothing changes until you choose. New restaurants start on When the check is settled.

The cash drawer

  1. 1The drawer is plugged into a receipt printer. On POS › Printing, tab Printers & Bridge, edit that printer and switch on Cash drawer on this printer. Which payments open it is the payment method’s Open the cash drawer (POS › Settings › Payment methods, cash only).
  2. 2On tab Receipts & labels, the Open the cash drawer card switches it on or off: Only when a receipt prints (the default) or Never. Save with Save changes.
  3. 3With it on, the drawer opens only when a receipt prints for a cash payment just taken: that payment’s automatic receipt (Print receipts automatically), or the first Print receipt on the Check settled screen. No receipt, no drawer.
  • The POS says Cash drawer opened only once the drawer’s printer took the pulse. If it can’t reach it you see Couldn’t reach the drawer printer. Open the drawer by hand.
  • A payment opens the drawer once — a reprint (from Payment history or the receipt view) or a retry never opens it, and a pulse that couldn’t be sent within a minute is dropped, so the drawer never springs open later.
TipShort on paper? Only these with your card methods prints for the guests who usually ask, and Print receipt covers the rest.
