Front of house
Discounts, voids & comps
Three everyday actions at the till, and the difference matters. A discount lowers the price. A void cancels an item or payment (a mistake, or a dish sent back). A comp gives an item free, on the house.
When to use which
- Discount — a goodwill gesture or a promo: a percentage or fixed amount off a line or the whole bill.
- Void — the item was rung up by mistake or sent back. It comes off and is recorded as voided.
- Comp — you're giving the dish away (an apology, a regular's birthday). It stays on the order but costs the guest nothing.
Kept honest
- These actions can be PIN-protected, so only authorised staff use them.
- Each one is recorded against the staff member who did it.
- Voids and discounts show up in your reports, so nothing hides.
- How big a discount someone can give is capped by their role.
Set discount caps per role under Team › Staff & roles — a waiter might give 10%, a manager more. It protects your margin without slowing service.
