Closing the shift and reading the Z-report
Count the drawer, see balanced / over / short, and know what the Z-report is telling you.

Closing is one honest count. Menulisa already knows what should be in the drawer — float, plus cash sales, plus and minus movements. You tell it what is, and the difference is the variance.
The scenario
End of the night. The screen says Expected in drawer: 812.50. You count 810.00.
Close it
- 1Press Close shift. It reminds you to count all cash, float included. Enter the Counted total: 810. The dialog immediately shows Short 2.50 next to Expected.
- 2Decide where the cash goes: Keep in drawer for next shift — say 200, tomorrow’s float — and Transfer out the rest to the Safe or a Bank bag, with an optional reference.
- 3Press Close shift. You’ll see Shift closed · short 2.50. Had you counted 812.50 it would say drawer balanced; 815, over 2.50.
- 4The Z-report is ready: sales by tender, tips, every movement with its reason, the float, the expected and counted totals, and the variance. It stays on the drawer screen as the most recent closed shift, and the day rolls into Reports › Daily close.
What a variance usually is
- A cash sale taken before the shift was opened (short by that sale).
- A movement that happened but wasn’t recorded (a payout nobody logged).
- Change given wrongly. A couple of coins either way is normal; a pattern on one person’s shifts is not.
TipClose every night, even if the same person opens in the morning. A shift that runs for a week has a variance nobody can explain; a shift that runs for a night has one you can.
