The POS on a phone or tablet: which app for which device

The Mac or Windows app is your main terminal; the Android app (1.2.0 and later) keeps working without a connection; iPhones and iPads run the live POS and need the internet.

There are two kinds of POS app, and they do different jobs. Picking the wrong one for a venue with unreliable internet is the most common setup mistake we see.

The apps, side by side

  • Menulisa POS for Windows and Mac — the main till. Set up as the Main terminal, it keeps the whole branch on the computer, numbers the orders and prints, so it keeps taking orders and payments with no internet at all, and syncs up when the connection returns. Other Macs and PCs on the same Wi‑Fi, set up as Additional terminal, lean on it and keep working too.
  • Menulisa POS on an Android phone or tablet — for the floor. From version 1.2.0 it keeps its own copy of the branch and keeps taking orders with or without a connection, sending every change to the main terminal over the Wi‑Fi (or through the cloud when it can’t reach it). It can’t be the main terminal itself. See Working without a connection on Android.
  • Menulisa POS on an iPhone or iPad — the same POS, live from the cloud. It needs the internet.

The scenario

A café with one counter and two waiters. The internet drops a couple of times a week, and the Wi‑Fi doesn’t reach the far end of the terrace.

Set it up

  1. 1Under POS › Devices › Get the apps, download Menulisa POS for the counter’s computer (macOS or Windows). Install and pair it as the Main terminal — this is the till that never stops.
  2. 2For the waiters, download the Android build from the same card. Install it, choose Sign in and scan the code from POS › Devices › Pair a terminal. The first start says Preparing this tablet while it downloads the branch.
  3. 3Each waiter signs in once with their PIN while the device is connected — from then on their PIN works offline too.
  4. 4When the internet drops, nothing changes on the Wi‑Fi: the phones keep sending to the main terminal. At the far end of the terrace, a phone keeps working on its own copy and sends what it holds when it’s back in range (or through the cloud, on mobile data).
TipUpdate the main terminal first: the Android app 1.2.0 needs the main terminal on version 1.1.31 or later. On an older main terminal, the phones keep their changes until it is updated.
